GPA scale converter
Convert a GPA proportionally between two different scale maximums (for example 4.0 to 10-point).
This is a simple proportional conversion (value รท source max ร target max). It does not apply any university-specific offset formula โ use the CGPA โ Percentage tab for those.
What GPA do I need?
Find the average grade you need in your remaining credits to hit a target CGPA.
GPA, SGPA and CGPA explained
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a credit-weighted average of your grades. In India, SGPA refers to the GPA for a single semester, while CGPA is the cumulative average across every semester completed so far. Both are calculated the same way โ multiply each grade point by its credit hours, add the totals, then divide by the total credit hours โ the only difference is whether you are averaging courses within one semester (SGPA) or averaging semesters across your whole program (CGPA).
Common 10-point grade scale (India)
| Grade | Points | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | Very good |
| B+ | 7 | Good |
| B | 6 | Above average |
| C | 5 | Average |
| P | 4 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Fail |
Exact grade names and cutoffs vary by university (AICTE/UGC-affiliated colleges, VTU, Anna University and others all differ slightly) โ use the editable scale above to match your institution exactly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GPA, SGPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) measures performance over a set of courses. SGPA (Semester GPA) is the GPA for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the credit-weighted average of all your SGPAs across every semester completed so far.
How do you calculate GPA from grades and credit hours?
Multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add up those totals, then divide by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course contributes 12 grade points toward the average.
How is CGPA calculated from multiple semesters?
Multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add the results together, then divide by the combined credit hours across all semesters. This weights semesters with more credits more heavily, the same way individual courses are weighted within a semester.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
There is no single official formula โ it depends on your university. Common approaches multiply CGPA by 9.5 or 9.4, or use the offset formula Percentage = (CGPA โ 0.75) ร 10 used by some Indian universities on a 10-point scale. Always confirm the exact formula with your institution for official purposes.
What is a good GPA or CGPA?
On a 4.0 scale, 3.5 or higher is generally considered excellent, 3.0-3.49 is good, and 2.0-2.99 is average. On a 10-point scale, 8.5 or higher is typically considered excellent and 7-8.5 is good, though classifications vary by university.
How do I find out what GPA I need to reach a target?
Enter your current GPA, current credit hours, target GPA, and remaining credit hours into the target calculator. It works out the average grade you need across the remaining credits, and flags it if that average would exceed the maximum possible on your scale.
Can this calculator handle a 10-point, 4.0 or 5-point grading scale?
Yes. Pick a preset grading scale or edit the grade labels and points directly โ the semester GPA calculator recalculates automatically using whatever scale you set.
