What each UTM parameter means

The 3 essentials

  • utm_source β€” where the traffic comes from (e.g. google, newsletter, facebook).
  • utm_medium β€” the type of channel (e.g. cpc, email, social).
  • utm_campaign β€” the specific campaign or promotion (e.g. spring_sale).

The optional extras

  • utm_term β€” the paid keyword you bid on (mainly for search ads).
  • utm_content β€” tells apart two links or creatives in the same ad (great for A/B tests).
  • utm_id β€” a campaign ID that ties the link to a campaign in your analytics.

How it works

Enter the page you are promoting, then fill in the campaign fields. ToolAdda appends the values as UTM query parameters and shows the finished link live. Copy it into your emails, ads, posts, or QR codes, and your analytics will attribute every click to the right campaign.

Privacy notice

Your link is built entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or stored on any server.

Frequently asked questions

What is a UTM parameter?

A small tag added to a URL, like utm_source=newsletter. Analytics tools read these tags to show which campaign or channel brought each visitor.

Which parameters do I actually need?

utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign are the three you should almost always fill in. The rest are optional.

Why lowercase everything?

UTM values are case-sensitive, so Facebook and facebook count as different sources. Lowercase keeps your reports clean.

Can I use it with Google Analytics 4?

Yes. GA4 and most analytics platforms automatically read standard UTM parameters.

Does it work if my URL already has parameters?

Yes. Existing query parameters and page anchors are preserved, and the UTM tags are added alongside them.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.
