How it works
- Pick a duration and a difficulty, or paste your own passage.
- Start typing. The timer begins on the first keystroke.
- Green letters are correct. Red letters are mistakes. The caret marks where you are.
- When time ends, copy the score. Your best and recent tests stay on this device.
How the score is counted
Correct characters ÷ 5, then ÷ minutes. A clean 60 characters in one minute is 12 WPM.
The same formula using every keystroke, including mistakes. A big gap means you are rushing.
Correct characters per minute, without the divide-by-five. Useful if you think in keystrokes.
Correct ÷ typed. Extra wrong keys pull this down even if you later finish the passage.
What counts as a good speed
| WPM | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Under 30 | Still learning the keyboard. Accuracy first. |
| 30–40 | Around the global average. |
| 50–60 | Comfortable for school and office work. |
| 70–80 | Fast. Most people never need more. |
| 90+ | Professional / competitive range. |
How to get faster
Speed follows accuracy. If net and raw WPM are far apart, slow down until the two numbers sit close, then add pace. Keep your fingers on the home row, look at the passage instead of the keys, and practise a few minutes most days rather than one long session.
A 60-second or 2-minute test is a better average than a 15-second sprint. Hard passages add punctuation and numbers because those are what slow people down in real work. Custom mode is there if you want to rehearse a script, a README, or an email you keep rewriting.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
Net WPM counts every five correctly typed characters as one word, then divides by minutes: WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes.
What is the difference between net WPM and raw WPM?
Net WPM only counts correct characters. Raw WPM counts every keystroke, including mistakes.
What is CPM?
Characters per minute — the correct-character count without dividing by five.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average. 50–60 is solid for office work. Keep accuracy above 95%.
How can I improve?
Use all ten fingers, keep your eyes on the screen, and fix accuracy before chasing speed.
Can I type my own text?
Yes. Turn on Custom passage, paste the text, and start typing.
Is this test free and private?
Yes. No account. Nothing is uploaded. Only your best WPM and a short local history stay in this browser.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, with the on-screen keyboard. A physical keyboard is still the honest measure.
What do Tab and Escape do?
While the test box is focused, Tab restarts the same passage and Escape loads a new one.
