What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

Both formulas describe the exact same physical relationship — mass relative to height squared — they simply start from different measurement units.

How BMI is calculated: a worked example

Take someone who is 170 cm tall and weighs 70 kg. Convert height to metres (1.70 m), square it (1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89), then divide weight by that figure: 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2. That places them in the WHO "Normal weight" band. Healthy weight range explained

Your "healthy weight range" is simply the span of body weights that would keep your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 at your current height — the boundary of the WHO normal-weight band. Ideal weight: Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas

BMI for men vs women

The BMI formula and its category cutoffs are identical regardless of sex — there is no separate "male BMI" or "female BMI" scale.
